Description
LAYBOND MULTITACK is a solvent-free, non-staining resin emulsion, designed
to produce a highly tacky film when dry.
Uses
LAYBOND MULTITACK is used as a pressure sensitive adhesive to bond
smooth-backed PVC sheet and tile (to BS3261 Types A & B) to smooth surfaces,
including most metals. It has the advantage of allowing immediate trafficking.
LAYBOND MULTITACK is also used as a release bond system for carpet
underlays to which carpet is adhered. This allows an easy release at any time.
LAYBOND MULTITACK may be used on concrete, terrazzo, smoothing
compounds, chipboard, hardboard and plywood substrates. It may also be used
directly onto asphalt sub-floors, though it may be necessary to first apply a
LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER SMOOTHING COMPOUND (please refer to our
Technical Department).
LAYBOND MULTITACK is, however, suitable for use with underfloor heating
installations, provided the maximum service temperature is not exceeded.
However, the heating should be switched off at least 48 hours before and after
installation of the floorcovering.
Preparation
Relevant Standards:
All phases of the installation should comply with the latest editions of the
following standards:-
BS CP102 Code of Practice for protection of buildings against water from the
ground.
BS 5325 Code of Practice for installation of textile floorcoverings.
BS 8203 Code of Practice for installation of sheet and tile flooring.
Sub-floor
The sub-floor must be thoroughly cleaned (preferably vacuumed), and be smooth,
structurally sound, dry and free from contaminants. It should also have an effective
damp-proof membrane and be suitably dry to receive a bonded floorcovering.
The only British Standard approved test for dryness is by properly calibrated
and insulated hygrometer giving a reading less than 75% RH. Where this has not
been achieved the use of LAYBOND HYDROTITE or LAYBOND SEALDECK
surface membranes will suppress residual moisture in a power floated concrete
slab or sand/cement screed, provided that a base dpm has been incorporated.
Please refer to the appropriate data sheet for full information.
When MULTITACK is being used, the area must be kept free of dust
contamination, and should therefore be free of other trades while application is
carried out.
Any deep indentations in the sub-floor should be repaired using LAYBOND
PLYCORAPID followed by a standard application of a LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER
SMOOTHING COMPOUND.
Smoothing Compounds
Where floors require smoothing, a LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER SMOOTHING
COMPOUND should be applied at a minimum thickness of 3mm. Where a
concrete base has had a surface treatment, this should be mechanically removed
prior to smoothing compound application.
Priming
Surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned (preferably vacuumed) and be smooth, dry
and free from contaminants. Porous surfaces and boards should be primed using
LAYBOND ISOBOND (diluted 1:6 with clean water) or ACRYLIC PRIMER and
allowed to dry.H This is particularly important with hardboard, chipboard and
plywood.
Application
As a pressure sensitive adhesive
LAYBOND MULTITACK should be applied using a trowel cut with notches 1.5mm
deep at 5mm centres. To facilitate immediate trafficking, it should then be rolled
with either a lambswool or mohair roller wetted with adhesive. This will also ensure a
uniform film rate of 15-20m² per 5 litres is obtained.
The adhesive should be allowed to dry to a clear tacky film (taking care to avoid
contamination throughout). Once dried, the floorcovering should be laid and rolled,
using a 68Kg WOLFF roller. The floor may then be opened for immediate use.
As an underlay Release System
LAYBOND MULTITACK should be applied with a lambswool roller or shallow
notched trowel at a rate of 35-45m² per 5 litres, depending on the type of underlay.
It should then be allowed to dry as above. Once dried, the underlay is laid, followed
by the application of adhesive for the carpet, in the traditional manner.
If laid into wet adhesive, the floorcovering must be kept traffic-free for up to 24 hours
(or protected using boards). The carpet should be smoothed to ensure no air bubbles
remain or, as an alternative, the double-drop method employed. Rolling may be
necessary, if specified by the floorcovering manufacturer.
As a broadloom tackifier (where recommended in the Guide To Good Flooring)
LAYBOND MULTITACK should be applied using a trowel cut with notches 1.5mm
deep at 5mm centres. Adhesive should be allowed to dry to a clear tacky film
before laying the carpet as per the Manufacturers instructions. Once laid the
carpet should be rolled using a 68Kg WOLFF roller.
Drying Time
This will depend on ambient temperatures, humidity and air flow. With low humidity
and good air flow, the drying time at 15ºC, should be 30-45 minutes. However,
if conditions are cold and/or wet, it may be markedly longer, possibly overnight in
the worst instance.
Note: Fuel burning space heaters produce water vapour which will increase the
humidity and extend drying time. Electric fans, where permissible are more effective.
Safe Handling Precautions
Flammability: .
Skin Contact: Occasional contact is unlikely to have an adverse effect except on
particularly sensitive skin. As a general precaution, avoid repeated or prolonged
contact. Remove skin contamination when wet with water. Use proprietary hand
cleaner if the product has dried.
Eye Contact: Although no serious problems are likely to be caused, eyes are a
sensitive area and contact should be avoided. In the event of accidental contact,
irrigate eyes immediately with clean water and obtain medical attention.
Inhalation: No major hazard, nevertheless use in well ventilated areas. In the event
of discomfort, as a result of inhalation, remove person to fresh air.
Oral Ingestion: With proper handling this should not occur. The possibility can be
minimised by not consuming food in the working area and by washing hands
thoroughly before eating, drinking or smoking.
Spillage: Spilt material should be mopped up immediately with an inert, absorbent
material, such as sand, and disposed of in accordance with regulations.
Disposal Of Containers: Do not leave containers on site where residue could be a
hazard to children, animals or the environment. Replace lids and remove to a
central disposal point.
Cleaning Of Tools
Clean immediately after use with clean water. Use white spirit if the material has
dried.
Storage
12 months under good storage conditions in original, unopened containers.
Keep out of direct sunlight at a temperature of between 5ºC and 40ºC.
PROTECT FROM FROST.
