Description
LAYBOND QUICKSTICK PLUS is a synthetic rubber/resin contact adhesive in
a blend of volatile solvents.
Uses
LAYBOND QUICKSTICK PLUS is used for bonding covings, skirtings, cork
and most textile, PVC, rubber and linoleum floorcoverings, to concrete, most
metals, plaster, wood and smoothing compounds on horizontal or vertical surfaces.
It can also be used for bonding laminated plastics and uPVC sheet to timber
and board surfaces (chipboard, hardboard and fibreboard) and to smooth
unpainted wall surfaces. It is ideal where a strong immediate bond is required
e.g. for bonding carpet trim edges, stair nosings and edging strips, linoleum to
timber counters, desk tops, etc.
Note: NOT SUITABLE FOR POLYSTYRENE.
Preparation
Relevant Standards:
All phases of the installation should comply with the latest editions of the
following standards:-
BS CP102 Code of Practice for protection of buildings against water from the ground.
BS 5325 Code of Practice for installation of textile floorcoverings.
BS8203 Code of Practice for installation of sheet and tile flooring.
Sub-floor
The sub-floor should be clean, structurally sound, dry and free from contaminants,
including surface hardeners and additives that may hinder adhesion. It should also
have an effective damp-proof membrane and be suitably dry to receive a bonded
floorcovering.
The only British Standard approved test for dryness is by properly calibrated
and insulated hygrometer giving a reading of less than 75% RH. Where this has
not been achieved the use of either LAYBOND HYDROTITE or LAYBOND
SEALDECK surface membranes will suppress residual moisture in power
floated concrete slabs or sand/cement screeds provided that a base dpm has been
incorporated. Please refer to the relevant data sheet for full information.
Any deep indentations in the sub-floor should be repaired using LAYBOND
PLYCORAPID followed by a standard application of a LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER
SMOOTHING COMPOUND.
Smoothing Compounds
Where floors require smoothing, a LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER SMOOTHING
COMPOUND should be applied at a minimum thickness of 3mm. Where a
concrete base has had a surface treatment, this should be mechanically
removed prior to smoothing compound application.
Priming
Surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned (preferably vacuumed) and be smooth,
dry and free from contaminants. Porous surfaces and boards should be primed
using LAYBOND ISOBOND (diluted 1:6 with clean water) and allowed to dry.
This is particularly important with hardboard, chipboard and plywood.
Application
Apply the adhesive to both surfaces with a suitable fine notched trowel, brush
or straight edge, ensuring even application has been achieved. Allow the solvent
to evaporate from both adhesive films (25 - 40 minutes depending on drying
conditions) so there is no solvent odour present before bringing surfaces together.
The open time is up to 75 minutes, i.e. bonds can be made up to this time
after application. Correct positioning is essential as an immediate bond forms
when the surfaces are brought together. Apply pressure over the whole bonded
area to ensure good contact is obtained. In cases where both substrates are
porous and an immediate bond is not essential, the surface being adhered can
be placed into wet adhesive applied to the substrate only. This method allows
for some final positioning.
Finishing
When used for bonding floorcoverings roll with a 68kg WOLFF roller unless
otherwise specified by the floorcovering manufacturer.
Safe Handling Precautions
Flammability: Highly flammable. Keep away from sources of ignition including
pilot lights and sparks (see Note). Take precautionary measures against static
discharge. Ensure thorough ventilation using flameproof mechanical blowers if
necessary. DO NOT SMOKE.
Note: Electric motors, light/power switches and steel tools may generate
sparks sufficient to ignite the product or its vapour, resulting in an explosion
and/or fire. Keep containers tightly closed when not in use.
Skin Contact: Contains solvents which cause de-fatting of the skin and, in
extreme circumstances, dermatitis. Avoid contact by careful working and use
of barrier cream on hands, arms and other exposed areas, or gloves. Remove skin
contamination immediately with a proprietary cleanser and wash with soap and
water.
Eye Contact: Could be harmful. In the event of accidental contact, wash eyes
immediately with clean water for 15 minutes and obtain medical attention.
Inhalation: Gives off irritating heavy vapours. Use only in well ventilated areas
and use respirators containing cartridges suitable for use with organic solvents
where necessary. In the event of discomfort as a result of inhalation, remove
person to fresh air and obtain medical attention.
Oral Ingestion: With proper handling this should not occur. The possibility can
be minimised by not consuming food in the working area and by washing hands
thoroughly before eating, drinking or smoking.
Spillage: Spilt material should be mopped up immediately with an inert,
absorbent material, such as sand, and disposed of in accordance with regulations.
Disposal Of Containers: Do not leave containers on site where residue could be
a hazard to children, animals or the environment. Replace lids and remove any
containers to a central disposal point.
Storage Conditions
12 months under good storage conditions in original, unopened containers.
Keep out of direct sunlight at a temperature of between 5ºC and 40ºC. Store
under cover in tightly closed containers, in accordance with the Highly
Flammable Liquids and Liquefied Petroleum Gases Regulations (1972).
Cleaning Of Tools
Clean with paraffin, white spirit or suitable proprietary brush cleaner.
Cleaning Of Surface
Any LAYBOND QUICKSTICK PLUS on the surface of the floorcovering should
be removed immediately with either paraffin or white spirit.
Container Size
LAYBOND QUICKSTICK PLUS is supplied in 5 and 2.5 litre tins.
