[Item Image] Laybond Adhesive - 48 Extra
Carpets and Linoleum

15L
Coverage: 40-50 Sq M per 15L
LAY48
Description
LAYBOND 48 EXTRA is a polymer re-inforced resin/alcohol adhesive, designed
to bond carpet, lino and cork tiles (except PVC backed).

Uses
LAYBOND 48 EXTRA is used for bonding all types of linoleum, felt, hessian
and fibre bonded carpets, as well as felt backed PVC. It may be used to bond
to concrete, cementitious screeds, wood, hardboard, chipboard and smoothing
compounds.

LAYBOND 48 EXTRA is suitable for use with underfloor heating installations,
provided the maximum service temperature is not exceeded. Heating should be
switched off for 48 hours before and after adhesive application.

Preparation
Relevant Standards:

All phases of the installation should comply with the latest editions of the
following standards:-

BS CP102 Code of Practice for protection of buildings against water from the
ground.

BS 5325 Code of Practice for installation of textile floorcoverings.

BS 8203 Code of Practice for installation of sheet and tile flooring.

Sub-floor

The sub-floor should be clean, structurally sound, dry and free from any
contaminants, including surface hardeners and additives, that may hinder adhesion.
It should also have an effective damp-proof membrane and be suitably dry to
receive a bonded floorcovering.

The only British Standard approved test for dryness is by properly calibrated
and insulated hygrometer giving a reading less than 75% RH. Where this has
not been achieved the use of LAYBOND HYDROTITE or LAYBOND SEALDECK
surface membranes will suppress residual moisture in power floated concrete
slabs or sand/cement screeds provided that a base dpm has been incorporated.
Please refer to the relevant data sheets for full information.

Any deep indentations in the sub-floor should be repaired using LAYBOND
PLYCORAPID followed by a standard application of a LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER
SMOOTHING COMPOUND.

Smoothing Compounds

Where floors require smoothing, a LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER SMOOTHING
COMPOUND should be applied at a minimum thickness of 3mm. Where a
concrete base has had a surface treatment, this should be mechanically removed
prior to smoothing compound application.

Priming
Surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned (preferably vacuumed) and be smooth,
dry and free from contaminants. Porous surfaces and boards should be primed
using LAYBOND ISOBOND (diluted 1:6 with clean water) and allowed to dry.

§ This is particularly important with hardboard, chipboard and plywood.

Application
Stir adhesive well before use.

Porous Surfaces

Apply LAYBOND 48 EXTRA evenly over the surface with a 2mm x 6mm notched
trowel. Spread, with a sweeping motion, holding the trowel at an angle of 60º.
Place the floorcovering into the adhesive while it is still wet.

Non-Porous Surfaces

For impervious surfaces or those of low porosity, e.g. asphalt or dense concrete,
a minimum 3mm application of LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER 2 LATEX
SMOOTHING COMPOUND is recommended WHEN APPLYING LINOLEUM.
This will provide an absorption layer for the adhesive. Application can then proceed
as for porous surfaces. In the case of fibre bonded or hessian carpets, these may
be applied direct to asphalt, dense concrete or existing PVC coverings, providing
they remain FIRMLY bonded.

Finishing
Unless specifically excluded by the floorcovering manufacturer, roll with a 68kg
WOLFF roller to ensure good overall contact. Felt-backed PVC should be pressed
into place by even hand pressure.

Cleaning
Tools: Clean immediately after use with methylated spirit.

Skin: Use a proprietary hand cleaner, followed by thorough washing with soap
and water.

Safe Handling Precautions
Flammability: Highly flammable. Keep away from sources of ignition including
pilot lights and sparks (see Note). Take precautionary measures against static
discharge. Ensure thorough ventilation using flameproof mechanical blowers
if necessary. DO NOT SMOKE.

Note: Electric motors, light/power switches and steel tools may generate sparks
sufficient to ignite the product or its vapour, resulting in an explosion and/or fire.
Keep containers tightly closed when not in use.

Skin Contact: Contains solvents which cause de-fatting of the skin and, in
extreme circumstances, dermatitis. Avoid contact by careful working and use of
barrier cream on hands, arms and other exposed areas, or gloves. Remove skin
contamination immediately with a proprietary cleaner and wash with soap and
water.

Eye Contact: Could be harmful. Wear protective eyeshields, especially where
there is a danger of splashing. In the event of accidental contact, wash eyes
immediately with clean water and obtain medical attention.

Inhalation: Contains highly volatile solvents, the vapours of which may cause
irritation. Use only in well ventilated areas and use respirators containing
cartridges suitable for use with organic solvents where necessary. In the event
of discomfort as a result of inhalation, remove person to fresh air and obtain
medical attention.

Oral Ingestion: With proper handling this should not occur. The possibility
can be minimised by not consuming food in the working area and by washing
hands thoroughly before eating, drinking or smoking. .

Spillage: Spilt material should be mopped up immediately with an inert,
absorbent material, such as sand, and disposed of in accordance with regulations.

Disposal Of Containers: Do not leave containers on site where residue could be
a hazard to children, animals or the environment.

Replace lids and remove any containers to a central disposal point.

Storage
12 months under good storage conditions in original, unopened containers.
Keep out of direct sunlight at a temperature of between 5oC and 40oC. Store
under cover in tightly closed containers, in accordance with the Highly
Flammable Liquids and Liquefied Petroleum Gases Regulations (1972).
