Description
A two component compound comprising specially graded aggregates/cement
and natural latex liquid.
Uses
LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER 2 is used for smoothing uneven floors prior to
laying decorative floorcoverings. It will accept most flooring adhesives in current
use and can be applied to concrete, sand/ cement screeds, asphalt, stone,
rigid metal and quarry tiles and can be used over old adhesive residue. In the
latter case any adhesive residue must be physically removed to leave a thin,
firmly bonded adhesive film only.
It must not be regarded as a substitute for a damp-proof membrane in direct-to-earth
floors and must not be used over existing vinyl or similar resilient floorcoverings.
It is suitable for use with underfloor heating installations provided a maximum
temperature of 27ºC is not exceeded. Heating should be switched off at least
48 hours before and after applying the compound.
Preparation
Relevant Standards:
All phases of the installation should comply with the latest editions of the
following standards:-
BS CP8102 Code of Practice for protection of buildings against water from the
ground.
BS 8203 Code Of Practice for installation of sheet and tile floorcoverings.
BS 5325 Code of Practice for installation of textile floorcoverings.
Sub-floor
The sub-floor should be clean, structurally sound, dry and free from surface
laitance and contamination, including surface hardeners and additives that
may hinder adhesion. Any deep depressions in the floor should be filled with
either LAYBOND PLYCORAPID or a mixture of the compound and LAYBOND
3mm GRANITE CHIPPINGS. Allow to dry.
It should also have an efficient damp-proof membrane and be suitably dry to
receive a bonded floorcovering.
The only British Standard approved test for dryness is by properly calibrated
and insulated hygrometer giving a reading less than 75% RH. Where this has
not been achieved the use of LAYBOND HYDROTITE or LAYBOND SEALDECK
surface membranes will suppress residual moisture in a power floated concrete
slab or sand/cement screed provided that a base dpm has been incorporated.
Please refer to the relevant data sheets for full information.
When preparing timber sub-floors, fix all loose blocks or boards and punch
nail heads below the surface. Fill any wide gaps with a stiff mixture of the
compound and allow to dry, prior to fixing plywood or hardboard.
Priming
Prime porous surfaces with LAYBOND ISOBOND (diluted 1:6 with clean water)
or LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER ACRYLIC PRIMER. Brush the primer well into
the surface and allow to dry. Very porous surfaces will require a second coat.
This is particularly important with hardboard, chipboard and plywood.
Mixing
Materials are in ready to use quantities of 23kg powder and 5 litres of liquid.
Pour the liquid into a suitable mixing container and add the powder gradually,
stirring continually with an electric stirrer. The mixed compound should be
used immediately. If the mix stiffens before it has been spread, it must be
discarded. Do not add water or extra latex. The correct mix permits any
application from 6mm to a feather edge, although for best results a minimum
3mm application is recommended.
If the compound is to be used at thicknesses in excess of 6mm it should be
bulked out with 3mm GRANITE CHIPPINGS. To the mixture of 1 bag of powder
and 1 bottle of liquid, half a 25kg bag of chippings should be added with the
mixture being continually stirred until thoroughly mixed.
Application
Spread evenly over the floor surface with a steel trowel to give a thickness of
3mm to 6mm. Once laid, a second trowelling can be carried out after 15-30
minutes depending on site conditions. Any trowel marks remaining after the
compound has set can be rubbed down with a sanding block. When used over
a surface damp-proof membrane, such as LAYBOND HYDROTITE or LAYBOND
SEALDECK, or other impervious surfaces, it is essential that a minimum 3mm
thickness is applied, in order to provide an absorbent medium for the adhesive.
Drying Time (3mm Thickness)
Allow at least 12 hours before loose laying a floorcovering and at least 18 hours
if the floorcovering is to be bonded. LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER 2 LATEX will
take light foot traffic after 3-4 hours, dependent upon site conditions. A room
temperature of 13-18oC should be maintained with a sub-floor temperature of at
least 5oC. The setting (trafficking) time will be delayed if the powder and liquid
have been stored at temperatures below 10oC and then used on a cold floor.
Safe Handling Precautions
Skin Contact: LAYBOND SCREEDMASTER 2 LATEX is normally non-hazardous.
The product, however, contains cement, which when mixed with water, produces
an alkaline mortar which can cause severe irritation (and in extreme cases
burning), if prolonged contact takes place. Wear protective gloves.
Eye Contact: Could be harmful. In the event of accidental contact, irrigate
eyes immediately with clean, cold water for 15 minutes and obtain medical
attention.
Inhalation: Mix in a well ventilated area and avoid inhalation as LAYBOND
SCREEDMASTER 2 LATEX contains ammonia which can cause irritation
during mixing and application, especially in confined spaces.
Oral Ingestion: With proper handling this should not occur. The possibility
can be minimised by not consuming food in the working area and by washing
hands thoroughly before eating, drinking or smoking.
Spillage: Spilt powder should be brushed up and spilt liquid or mixed material
mopped up immediately with an inert, absorbent material, such as sand, and
disposed of in accordance with regulations.
Disposal Of Containers: Do not leave sacks or bottles on site where residue
could be a hazard to children, animals or the environment. Remove to a
central disposal point.

Clean immediately after use with clean water.
