Doublestick Contract Installation Systems
Step by Step Guide:
For The Cloud 9 New Silver Lining and The FRontrunner Flame
Retardant Installation System
New Silver Lining and FRontrunner (hereafter referred to as the underlays)
Contract Doublestick Systems are Heavy Density Products developed
for Heavy Contract Use.
They are 6mm thick with a unique non woven top surface for better
adhesive coverage.
Tools required:
A suitable notched trowel
A light roller to smooth the underlay onto sub-floor.
A glider to smooth wrinkles and bubbles and firmly bond carpet
into Contract 3000 NIF
(3300 NIF) adhesive.
Recommended Adhesives:
Permanent Adhesives - Carpet to the underlay.
Ball & Young Contract 3000 NIF - 15 litres.
Ball & Yound Contract 3300 NIF - 15 litres. (To be used if the
carpet has a P.U. backing)
Ball & YOung Contract 3500 NIF Tackifier - 15 litres (The underlay to
sub-floor).
Seaming Cement.
Ball & Young Floor Primer 3800 - 10 litres
Alternative approved adhesives for the underlays listed above.
Preparation:
All floor sufaces must be clean, permanently dry, even and free of cracks.
They must be stable to tensile and compressive forces. It is essential to
provide effective damp proofing where there is a risk of rising damp or
condensation.
Floors should be screeded or sealed where necessary.
Floor surfaces such as Asphalt, Anhydrite and Magnesia Cement plasters,
must be screeded to at least 2mm thickness.
The underlays are not recommended for use on a wood block floor, unless
the sub-floor is able to breathe. (Wood block is not to be confused with
laminate flooring).
The Method:
Unroll the underlay, with the printed side up. Cut to shape leaving excess
around the margins.
Fold back one half of the underlay and using the notched trowel apply the
Contract 3500 NIF Tackifier to the sub-floor ensuring coverage is complete.
Allow the Contract 3500 NIF Tackifier to dry completely - it will turn from
white to clear.
Unfold the underlay onto the dry Tackifier (if it is not completely dry, the
underlay will bond permanently to the sub-floor).
Repeat this method with the other half of the underlay. Trim in the underlay
neatly around the margins allowing a gap around the area if a tuck finish is
required. The gap will depend on the quality and the thickness of the carpet
being laid.
All carpet selvedges should be stripped, where necessary, and sealed to
prevent fraying. Position the carpet precisely on the underlay before any
adhesive is used. All pattern matching, borders and mitred corners should
be carefully pre-planned.
The underlay seams should always be laid at right angles to the carpet
seams. Fold back one half of the carpet and apply the Contract 3000 NIF
(3300 NIF) with a trowel.
The size of the notch will depend on the backing of the carpet being laid,
but it will be a minimum of 1.2mm x 2.5mm. When doublesticking carpets
with non-pourous or low absorbent backs (such as action back),
It is important to allow the adhesive to pre-air before the carpet is bonded
to the underlay.
The amount of pre-airing time will depend upon local conditions. It is not
advisable to lay this type of carpet straight into wet adhesive.
Sharp corners of the trowel should be rounded with a file to prevent them
catching on the underlay top surface.
Unfold the carpet onto the wet adhesive and use the glider to smooth out
any wrinkles or bubbles and to ensure a firm bond.
Repeat this method for the other half.
All seams should be bonded with F30 Seaming Cement. Carefully trim
in the carpet in the preferred manner.
Gripper :
The use of gripper should be considered on all doublestick installations.
This is on account of the fact that carpet shrinkage - be it natural, caused
by atmospheric conditions or carpet cleaning - may result in movement
away from the walls.
Lifting the underlays for access and renovation:
Because of its unique Corona Treated Film backing, used in conjunction
with contract 3500 NIF Tackifier, the underlays can be lifted from the sub-floor.
Unlike other systems which do not lift cleanly, any of the three underlays
will not break up leaving lumps of underlay contaminating the floor. The
underlay may be relaid after access has been achieved.
Underlay Data:
Ball & Young's Cloud 9 New Silver Lining and the FRontrunner Flame
Retardant underlays are the only products recommended for Heavy Contract
Doulbestick Installations. FRontrunner is recommended for Heavy Contract
Doublestick Installations where very high specification flame retardancy is
required. Please consult Ball & Young for advice.

A consultation with the carpet manufacturer may be necessary to
establish the suitability of the carpet for the doublestick installation
method and compatibility of the carpet backing with the above approved
adhesives. All carpets, where selvedges have been removed, should have
cut edges sealed. Site conditions and methods of installation vary and are
beyond our control.
